Oak Park Loses to Calabasas and TO in Non League Event

Freshman Mirza fires 81 in debut

Oak Park Claims 2010 TVL Title With Win at Sterling Hills

Junior Connor Paden advances to CIF Individuals

The Oak Park Eagles were crowned Tri Valley League Champions after winning the fifth of six league tournaments.  Led by Senior Tyler Schwanz who was medalist with a one over par 72, the Eagles carded a team total of 402 to best St. Bonaventure by six strokes.  The Seraphs also finished second in league followed by Malibu who finished third in the finals and third in TVL play.  All three teams advance to the CIF Central Coast Regionals Monday at Cypress Ridge in Arroyo Grande.  The Eagles have advanced to CIF in each of the 10 years Bruce Beck has been coach.  In that time, the team has won six TVL Championships and have never finished lower than second.

Junior Connor Paden is the lone Eagle to advance to CIF individual play.  Connor, who shot 79 at Sterling, finished in a three way tie for fourth in league play  with Oak Christian's Ryan Prosser and Malibu's Mo Bardovi to force a playoff for post season individual play.  After a bogey by Bardovi, Paden and Prosser both parred the first playoff hole, (436 yard par 4 first hole) to represent the TVL along with 2010 Player of the Year Ryan Sarmiento of Malibu and St. Bonventure's Jon Poole.

Paden was also one of three players to receive Tri Valley First Team All League Honors.  Also named were senior Nic Yapp and Junior Jake Orens.  Alex Kim and Chris Riggs received Second Team honors.  Schwanz, arguably the best player in the league, led all Tri Valley League players by with a 71.8 stroke average (nearly three strokes better than Sarmiento). He was not eligible for post season play or honors because he did not compete in all six matches. With his win, Tyler also moved into second place all time for the Eagles with 12 career victories, behind 2003 grad and current professional golfer Brandon Beck.

Kim continues to show steady improvement in his first year averaging 76.6 in his last three high school matches. During the weekend, the freshman followed a first round score of 76 with a career best of three under par 69 at the VCJGA Play It Again Sports Open at Simi Hills  GC.    With the loss, the Eagles drop to 19-8 overall.  The Eagles resume league play Thursday at Elkins Ranch.

Oak Park Plays Well in Loss to Undefeated Arcadia

Schwanz Cleared to Play

Although the Eagles lost in a non league match to undefeated Arcadia at Santa Anita Golf Course, the Eagles showed tremendous improvement.  Led by freshman Alex Kim's five over par 77, the Eagles bested their last performance by 20 strokes and battled Arcadia all the way to the end finishing 405-393.  The hard work  by first year sophomore Jason Selby who has been reworking his swing, was evident with a 10-over par 82.  Freshman Zach Mirza, who has been making adjustments to his swing also contributed with his second solid outing in a row with an 83.

The Eagles also received good news that senior and defending Tri Valley Player of the Year Tyler Schwanz has been cleared to play.  Tyler, who was initially believed to be out for the year after injuring his elbow in a non-golf related accident, was cleared to play by his doctors.   Tyler, who practiced today for the first time since the accident, may join the Eagles in time for the next league match on Thursday.
